「 ultrakill 」

ultrakill is a boomer shooter made by arsi "hakita" patala. its working title was
devil may quake, a reference to the devil may cry series (as the game contains a "style" mechanic tied to its ranking system)
and the quake series, a classic boomer shooter which heavily inspired ultrakill. the story and concept is, to put it lightly,
fucking psychotic. it's like if you gave adhd autism and then gave adhd to the adhd's autism.
and frankly? i cannot fucking get enough of it. the gameplay and combat loop, too, are utterly insane,
and heavily inspired by another favorite of mine, doom eternal. the game throws countless enemies at you,
fodder and fiend alike, and every single enemy is a threat. damage is very high, and healing is only accomplished through soaking in the
blood of enemies. the game also forces you, if you wish to survive, to use everything in your arsenal.
when you get a new weapon, it's not a replacement but a genuine addition. weapons also have variants which are a lot of fun to play with.

it's easily one of my favorite games of all time, and one of the most difficult i've played.
the ranking system differs slightly in each level, but follows the same pattern:
achieving the highest (s) rank on three factors - style (as mentioned above), kills, and time - without
dying at all earns a perfect (p) rank on the level. p-ranking all of the prelude
and act 1 unlocks level p-1, known as "soul survivor" - the first prime sanctum, a level containing a prime soul
- ultrakill's version of a superboss. the first prime soul is minos prime. i have beaten him and p-ranked p-1.

there is one more prime sanctum currently in the game: p-2, "wait of the world", in which sisyphus prime is fought. to access
this level, the player must p-rank all of the prelude, act 1, and act 2, as well as having beaten p-1.
i currently have p-ranked all of the prelude, act 1, and act 2, and have beaten sisyphus prime.
i have yet to p-rank p-2.
